What are the Pain Relief Treatments for Neck Pain?

Treatment for neck pain depends upon the severity of the condition. Mild chronic cases can be relieved by applying some hot or cold packs to the neck.  Try hot and cold treatments alternately to get the best results.

Together they help reduce inflammation and relax muscles, thereby relieving pain. Over the counter pain medications like paracetamol, ibuprofen etc can also help ease the pain. Topical analgesic, anti inflammatory creams and gels are also available to treat chronic neck pain. Severe neck pain that arises due to trauma or impact can be treated by asking the patient to wear a neck collar for adequate support for neck muscles.

Alternate heat and cold treatments will also provide some relief. Occasional periods of rest are also advised. However, too much rest can stiffen muscles and worsen neck pain. Severe and persistent neck pain can be countered using prescription medications like opioid analgesics. If neck muscles and stiff and tense, a muscle relaxant like diazepam may be prescribed.

Doctors may inject some pain relieving medications near the nerves or at the joints to help reduce pain in that area. Good posture, physiotherapy and exercise to strengthen the muscles of the neck will also help manage neck pain effectively.
