What are the Symptoms of a Herniated Disc?

Symptoms of herniated disc differ depending on the size and level of herniated disc.

There may or may not be severe pain in the lower parts of your back when the nerve does not get pressed by the herniated disc. When the nerve is compressed by the herniated disc you may get pain in the area of your body where that particular nerve travels. Herniation in the lower back can cause sciatica which causes pain in area between buttocks and foot or ankle of the leg. Herniation at the ends of lowest ribs can cause severe pain in the thigh. When herniation occurs in neck you may develop severe pain in the areas of shoulders, chest of your body. The major symptoms of herniation are:

1. Severe pain in the leg which may or may not be continuous.
2. Severe pain in the muscle and muscle spasms.
3. There may be a sign of cauda equine syndrome which means incontinence of bowels or bladder.
4. Weakness in muscle due to nerve irritation. This is because signals generated from the brain are obstructed.
5. Patients suffering from herniated disc may get tingling sensation or numbness.
6. Stretching or movement of your body causes intolerable pain in the areas of lower extremities or muscles.
