Are There Neck Exercises for Pain Relief?

Neck exercises are very beneficial in increasing the range of motion of the neck and strengthening muscles. Exercises stretch neck muscles and make them more flexible. It also decreases neck stiffness, pain and inflammation. Cervical flexion and extension exercises are good for increasing range of motion of the neck.

Maintain a standing position. Tuck your chin in a gently bring down your head so that the chin touches the chest. Now bend the head backwards as far as possible. Repeat this five times. Lateral flexion exercises strengthen neck and shoulder muscles. Bring your right ear to your right shoulder without moving or rotating your head. Do the same with the left ear and left shoulder. Do this 5 times. Another simple exercise involves turning your head as far as possible such that your chin is positioned over your shoulder. Hold this position for 3-5 seconds. Do not move the shoulder. Now rotate the head back to normal position. Repeat this few times.

Another exercise involves standing with your feet apart and your hands behind your head. Bend form side to side moving only the upper back and not the waist or hips. A physiotherapist can suggest many more exercises to give you relief from neck pain.
