Is there Pain Relief for Joint Pain?

Joint pain is mainly associated with arthritis. Muscle or tendon injuries, sprains etc can also lead to joint pain. There are many ways to relieve joint pain. Often, over the counter pain killers like paracetamol are effective in reducing joint pain. In case of inflammation, non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs may be prescribed.

These include drugs like aspirin, ibuprofen etc. CoX-2 inhibitors, which block the inflammatory response, are also used. Disease modifying anti rheumatic drugs (DMARDS) also help reduce pain and inflammation associated with arthritis. There are several topical creams, gels, lotions etc available for treating joint pain. They contain analgesics like salicylates which penetrate into the skin and offer some pain relief. Diclofenac gels and patches are also very effective in relieving joint pain around areas like hands, wrists, elbows, feet, ankles, knees etc. In some cases, doctors prescribe lidocaine patches which have an anesthetic effect. Supplements containing glucosamine, chondroitin, vitamin B3, manganese etc are also effective in maintaining healthy joints and reducing joint pain.

Alternative treatments like acupuncture, herbs, meditation, yoga, aromatherapy etc are also effective in managing joint pain. These treatments have no side effects or risks and are therefore safer than prescription and over the counter medications.
