What Is A Herniated Disc?

There are soft cushion like discs present between the bones in your spine. When these discs are in normal health, they act as shock absorbers preventing damage to the spinal cord that may be caused by the shocks. This also imparts flexibility to the spine due to which we can bend. But when some damage occurs to the disc, it will bulge or break open.

This condition is known as herniated disc. Lower part of the spine is commonly affected by herniated disc. Sometimes neck and upper spine are also affected. Wear and tear of the disc is the main cause behind herniated disc. If the spine is injured then it may develop some cracks on the outer layer of disc. From these cracks the gel inside the disc will come out causing the disc to bulge or break out into pieces. Herniated disc caused in the lower spine will cause pain, numbness and weakness in the buttocks and legs.

If you suffer from herniated disc then take bed rest for three to four weeks so as to prevent further damage to the discs. Regular exercise will provide relief from pain and help to keep spine flexible. Also use heating pad to provide warmth to the back.
