What Is A Drug Pump?

Drug pump is a medicine delivery system that provides pain medicines directly into the fluid filled area in the area surrounding the patient’s spinal cord. Instead of going to the circulatory system medicines goes directly to pain receptors that are located near the spine. Using a small fraction of medicine dose, relief from pain can be achieved and is faster as compared to oral medication.

This system consists of a catheter and pump. Both these equipments are placed under the patient’s skin. Pump is round in shape and delivers pain medications. Catheter which is a tube is inserted in the spine and is connected directly with the pump. At the time of surgery the pump is filled with fluid medicine at the completion of which you have to visit the doctor again for more dosage of fluid medicine and fill the pump.

Spinal cord acts as the highway for transfer of signal to the brain and the medicine in the pump interrupts the signal before the signal reaches to the brain. When no medications are working out to relieve you from chronic pain, then doctor will prescribe implantation of drugs pumps. Improper usage of drugs can lead to overdose of the patient.
