Is There Pain Relief for Charley’s Horse?

A charley horse is a sudden involuntary muscular contraction that frequently occurs in leg. The root cause of charley horse is hot weather and excessive exercise. Charley horse is usually caused due to lack of water in body and mineral deficiency such as sodium, potassium, calcium. Charley horse can occur even at the night while sleeping. The following measures can be taken to relieve pain form Charley horse:

1. A high intake of mineral rich food should be taken in diet. Orange juice and banana should be taken regularly to increase potassium and calcium level.
2. Stretch before exercise. Walk on the ball of your heel to give relief to the muscles. This will help to reduce tension on the muscles. It is one of the best methods to get relief from Charley horse.
3. Gently massaging your body for proper blood flow also contributes to relive pain due to Charley horse.
4. If the muscle pain continues, then switch to non steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines.
5. Avoid straining your muscles by doing rigorous work.
6. If a charley horse occurs, keep the leg in warm water for sometime which helps in relieving pain.
7. Drink plenty of water throughout the day so as to keep proper supply of oxygen to the muscles.
