What Causes Phantom Pain?

The exact cause of phantom pain is still unknown but it is believed to be originated from spinal cord and brain. Phantom pain is associated with different theories. Causes of phantom pain are as follows:

1. Changes in climatic conditions such as change in weather, change in air pressure affect the level of phantom symptom.
2. Stressful lifestyle can cause phantom pain.
3. Frequent illness such as cold, flu, infection of throat, viruses can increase the risk of phantom pain. People will feel phantom pain only at the time of illness.
4. Clotting of blood.
5. Damaged nerve endings.
6. Amputation i.e. cutoff surgery of both the legs. For some people the phantom pain reduces with time but with some others it will keep on increasing and it is challenging task for such people to face it.
7. Phantom pain risk increases when the surgery is not done properly.
8. Poor posture which interrupts blood flow thus causing phantom pain.
9. Long period of physical inactivity can result in phantom pain and especially office workers are common sufferers from this. So sit in good posture to avoid phantom pain.
10. Even if the part of the body near that of the amputated part is touched, the person may feel phantom pain.
