Is Aspirin a Pain Relief Medicine?

Aspirin or acetylsalicylic acid is a non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. It is also an efficient pain killer. Aspirin is used to treat pain, fever, inflammation and so on. Aspirin is available in many forms like capsules, tablets, suppositories. Aspirin is available over the counter. It works by preventing the formation of prostaglandins. These chemical messengers are involved in several processes like relaying pain signals, triggering inflammation.

By blocking the synthesis of prostaglandins, aspirin helps to reduce pain and inflammation associated with conditions like arthritis, tendonitis, and wounds. Aspirin does not act on any specific part of the body. Its action is distributed throughout the body. Besides relieving pain and inflammation, aspirin also reduces the tendency of the blood and offers some degree of protection against heart attacks and strokes.

Since aspirin has anti clotting activity, it should be avoided in case there is a wound which tends to bleed. Breastfeeding or pregnant women, people with kidney disease, high blood pressure, blood clotting disorders etc should take aspirin only in consultation with a doctor.
